Description
Antique early-19th Century Swiss 18k gold & enamel snuff box, of traditional rectangular shape with rounded corners, the cover inset with a matte gold panel chased with the raised head of a Roman Emperor (Commodus, often depicted with a lion pelt draped on his shoulder, born Lucius Aurelius Commodus, his father Marcus Aurelius. His reign is commonly considered to mark the end of the golden period in the history of the Roman Empire known as the Pax Romana. The sides chased with fruiting vines and decorated with taille d’épargne blue enamel border. Unmarked, tested 18k gold.
