Description

A pair of 19th century micromosaic earrings. The tops have round micromosaics, with pink and red roses, blue and purple smaller flowers with leaves, on a white background, with surrounding wire twist and plain gold borders. Double oval flat links join the tops to eight point stars, with bird and leaf garland micromosaics, with wire twists between surrounding micromosaics, in the points of the stars, with white trefoils, on alternating red and blue backgrounds; with three pendant drops, the centre drop with white decoration on red; the outer drops have blue white and red micromosaics; in closed back settings, with a bird head mark on the back of each star, on wire fittings, Italian, circa 1870.

Grand Tour micromosaics were made by craftsmen who had trained in the workshops of the Vatican. They set up stands in the area surrounding Rome’s Spanish Steps, where most of the tourists stayed. They sold ready-made pieces and took commissions. The majority of micromosaics are unsigned, although Gioacchino Barberi and Giacomo Raffaelli were master craftsmen who did sign their pieces. The micromosaics were usually sold without frames and tourist went to jewellers to have them set in jewellery or decorative objects.
