WILLIAM GOUGH Gough & Silvester - Gothic Sterling Silver Gilt Claret Jug

£1,500.00

Description

A silver & crystal claret jug made by the firm of Gough & Silvester.

This fine and unusual sterling silver gilt and crystal claret jug is made in the Victorian Gothic taste. The crystal body lightly etched in the ancient Greek / Roman style, in a stylised Rams head design, all over an ornate star cut base.

The silver gilt (gold plated / vermeil) mount echoes the design, with fine engraved lid, hollow handle, ending with the anthemion base and beaded collar. The foot has a gilt silver band (not hallmarked).

When we received the jug it had been well loved over the last 150 years. The original gilt finish was worn at the extremities, so we've had this piece professionally re-plated, as a result the piece now looks absolutely stunning with that all over gold finish - it's a real statement piece that really stands out.

Please see above for quantity available. Price is per piece.

Markings: Fully hallmarked for .925 sterling silver, London 1865. Hallmarked for WG for William Gough as per the image above, in addition the lid bears the touch marks to the interior.

Size: Measures 9 1/2" (24 cm) tall.

Condition: Item is in excellent order. The interior of the glass is clean with no signs of cloudiness. The foot silver band is looks to be original, but does hide some damage to the crystal - we think that this could be made as part of the production rather that a recent or alteration. Please see images above.
