Description
An antique amethyst, pearl, diamond and gold pansy flower brooch, with a pearl, surrounded by a cluster of rose-cut diamonds, in pinched, collet settings, surrounded by claw set, carved amethyst, forming pansy petals, mounted in gold, with a pin and roller catch fitting, circa 1900.
In Victorian symbolism and the language of flowers pansies represent "thought", deriving from the French pensée - to think. It is associated with loving thoughts, remembrance, admiration, nostalgia, contemplation, secret or platonic affection, "thinking of you" and even the fragility or strength of love.
