Description
An antique silver "swing-handled" offering bowl / basket, late 19th to early 20th century (the British colonial period in Burma, now Myanmar).
This circular silver basket has a scalloped, lobed rim rising to a hinged swing handle, allowing the vessel to be carried or suspended. The exterior is decorated in high-relief repoussé with a continuous band of courtly figures in traditional Qajar dress, engaged in processional and ritual activity — including offerings made before a lit shrine and figures bearing yoked yokes/vessels — set within dense scrolling floral borders. The scenes likely illustrate episodes from the Jataka tales, the popular Buddhist narratives of the Buddha's former lives, a common decorative program on Qajar ceremonial silver of this period. The interior bowl is left plain and polished. Such vessels were produced in significant numbers during the British colonial era, when colonial patronage and silverware exhibitions encouraged Qajar silversmiths to develop and showcase this narrative repoussé style.
