An antique Persian silver "swing-handled" offering bowl / basket, late 19th to early 20th century.
A Circular Silver basket with scalloped rim and hinged swing handle, supported on four feet. The broad border is densely decorated with repoussé figural scenes separated by flowering plants, depicting courtly entertainments, musicians, servants, merchants, hunters and scenes from everyday life. The decoration reflects the revival of Persian miniature painting in nineteenth-century metalwork. The plain central well contrasts with the richly ornamented rim and would have accommodated fruit, sweets or confectionery. Such luxury baskets were produced for affluent households and ceremonial entertaining.
