Description

A bracelet of exceptional quality and historical significance, in 18ct yellow gold, dating precisely to 1850 — the clasp bearing a registered design mark dated October 4th of that year, confirming this as a piece ambitious enough for its maker to seek formal protection. The centre panel is a tour de force of mid-Victorian goldsmithing: an open quatrefoil mount in matte gold with boldly modelled acanthus leaf terminals at the cardinal points and scrollwork filling the interior, set at the centre with a floral arrangement of cushion and pear-shaped natural Burmese rubies totalling approximately 3 carats, alternating with old mine cut diamonds of approximately 0.65 carats, graded SI clarity and J colour. Further ruby and diamond accents appear on the shoulder pieces that flank the panel on each side. The rubies are of Burmese origin — the most prized provenance for the stone — with the characteristic vivid, slightly bluish-red colour that distinguishes Burmese material from stones of other origins.

The centre panel is carried on a double-row woven herringbone snake link chain of considerable quality, the links closely and evenly formed throughout, fastening with a rectangular box clasp that bears the registered design inscription. At 20.2 grams the bracelet has a satisfying weight and presence on the wrist. Condition is excellent for its age — a remarkable survival of over 175 years. A piece for the serious collector of antique jewellery.
