Description

Let's be completely transparent from the start: this Omega reference 2996-1 is one of the most interesting, unique, and slightly mysterious watches we have ever brought in. Based on Omega's archives, the serial number dates the movement right to 1964.

To be honest, we didn't buy this watch because of its reference number or historical standard specs—we bought it purely because of the pink salmon vertical-lined dial. It is absolutely gorgeous, in immaculate condition, and the way the light catches those crisp, vertical textured lines on the wrist is unbelievable.

The case itself adds a fascinating layer to the watch's story. It is finished in a beautiful pink gold plating. Now, if you talk to some vintage Omega purists, they’ll tell you Omega never officially cataloged a pink gold-plated version for this specific 2996 case reference. However, other seasoned collectors will argue that they absolutely did, as Omega was famous during this era for sometimes mixing and matching dials, hands, and case finishes for specific regional markets. We aren't entirely sure which side of the history book this one falls into, but that mystery is exactly what makes vintage watch collecting so much fun.

As you'd expect from a watch of this age, there is some wear to the gold plating. Interestingly, near the case back, the pink gold has naturally aged and turned into a yellow gold tone over time. It gives the piece an incredible, authentic patina, and you can tell that someone really used and cherished this watch throughout its life.
Regardless of the debate, the watch is a total stunner. It has just gone through a full mechanical service, meaning it's running perfectly and ready for daily wear. We've paired it with a high-end, gloss-finish alligator leather strap that complements the gold tones beautifully. If you want a rare, talking-piece vintage Omega with a dial you won't see anywhere else, this is it.
