A Renaissance rock crystal, gold and enamel pendant set with the crucifixion.
Spanish, first quarter of the 17th century.
Measures 6.4 x 3.2 x 1.9cm.
The devotional pendant contains a double sided calvary group with Christ upon the cross, St. John the Evangelist and the Virgin stand to either side of the crucifix.The glazed rock crystal pendant opens and the crucifixion group is viewable to both sides. The crest of a noble European family is set to each side of the base of the crucifix, the crest is adorned with three heads, similar to the one used on the national flag of Corsica, among others.
A similar pendant with the Annunciation can be found in the Hispanic Museum and Library, Accession Number: R3493.
