Description

A very fine 15ct Yellow Gold (tested) "Essex Crystal" Pendant depicting a small "Scottie" type dog. Essex crystals became very popular souvenirs during late Georgian and the Victorian periods. Usually commissioned to reflect a meaningful image, the reverse of the crystal is hand sculpted in the concave form to reflect the image required, this reverse sculpture is then hand coloured with appropriate paints and enamels to highlight the carved relief. This beautiful pendant is mounted in a simple 15ct. Yellow Gold (tested) "Roped Edged" frame and suspended (via an articulated "jump ring") by a fine 15ct Yellow Gold (marked) chain with its original barrel clasp.

15ct Yellow Gold this was frequently used in England between 1850 and 1932, when it became the preferred material to be used in the construction of finely worked Gold jewellery as it is much stronger than 18ct.
