Description
An antique snake necklace in 15ct gold. The serpent's body winds through a gold loop and down to a textured head, set along its length with a graduated row of five oval amethysts in rich violet. The pink stones at its eyes give it a watchful look, and a small gold drop set with a pink stone hangs from its mouth on a fine chain. Within the loop, a crescent of graduated pearls glows softly against the gold. The reverse is engraved with fine scales, a detail that is easy to miss and shows the quality of the making.
The snake was a symbol of eternity and everlasting love, and it was at the height of its popularity in Victorian jewellery. The pendant hangs from a double trace chain at 17", with a round amethyst set at each shoulder, so the colour carries up to the neck. The piece has real presence and plenty of detail.
