Antique Chinese Silver Circular Box with Lid and Plum Blossom Ornament - circa 1900
A joyous box, exquisitely ornamented using repousse and chased techniques which depict that perennial favourite, the flowering of plum blossom in springtime set against a finely tooled background. Buds and blossoms erupt from gnarled and tangled branches signifying the start of spring and with it, anticipation, optimism, regeneration and hope.
In our opinion, it is very likely that this box has been carefully packaged and stored away for more than a hundred years. There are no signs of prior use or wear. The condition is impeccable. This delightful antique box is still in ‘as new’ condition, despite the passage of time. The repousse and chased elements are deep and crisp and the craftsmanship very skilful and exceptionally good. It is these factors which differentiate this box from others of similar shape featuring a similar design. There are Chinese marks to the underside of the base.
There is a vacant circular cartouche to the centre of the pull off lid which is suitable for an engraved monogram. The plum blossom design surrounds it and continues around the side of the lid and surrounds the body of the box. There are narrow borders of plain silver around the top and the bottom and encircling the point where the top and bottom of the box fit together.
