Berlin Iron Mythological Necklace

£3,700.00

Description

Fine quality Berlin iron necklace, circa 1830. The individual narrative elements are encircled by frames which were cast separately. The pieces were joined afterwards, creating a silhouette effect. The mythological depictions on the necklace are of Cupid or Cupid and Psyche in various guises, including the marriage of Cupid and Psyche. Two panels depict the goddesses Day and Night after bas-reliefs by Thorvaldsen. The mythological panels alternate with rose elements and the clasp is in the form of a maenad. There is a similar necklace illustrated on page 275 of Schmuttermeier’s Cast Iron From Central Europe 1800 -1850. The necklace is 17.5 inches long. The central panel measures 1.5 inches by 1 and 1/4 inches and the smallest panels next to the clasp measure one inch by 3/4 of an inch. It is in immaculate, rust-free condition and is surprisingly light on the neck.
