Fede Ring - Charlotte Sayers

£4,850.00

Description

A rare and romantic gold fede ring dating from the late 16th to early 17th century, the bezel beautifully modelled as a pair of clasped hands holding a heart, a traditional symbol of love, fidelity and devotion. The hands emerge from finely detailed frilled cuffs and decorative scrolled sleeves, with traces of the original white enamel still surviving across the surface. The interior of the band bears the touching inscription ‘YOVRS IN HART’, engraved in serifed Roman capitals, a declaration of enduring affection characteristic of the period. Fede rings, their name derived from the Italian mani in fede, meaning ‘hands joined in faith’, were traditionally exchanged as tokens of love, betrothal or marriage.

The ring was discovered by a metal detectorist in Berkshire in the early 1990s, adding an interesting provenance to this remarkable survivor of early English jewellery.
