Description
A rare and unusually tender 19th-century ring, set in 15ct gold with an oval carnelian intaglio depicting a small dog resting on a bed.
Above it, the French motto “L’Amitié et Fidèle” - Faithful Friendship - is carved in delicate serif lettering.
The image is so specific, so still, it feels personal.
This was almost certainly made to honour a beloved pet, a private commission, not a commercial piece.
Likely carved in France or by a French-trained hand, but set in Britain in the mid-19th century, the ring reflects the cross-cultural language of sentimental jewellery at the time.
The proportions are elegant: the setting simple, allowing the stone to speak.
The warmth of the 15ct gold, the softness of the carving, and the use of the French language suggest a wearer with feeling - and taste.
Today, it remains an extraordinary object of remembrance.
A wearable relic of love, loyalty, and quiet emotion.
UK ring size P. Face of ring 1.5cm x 1.2cm. Excellent antique condition.
