Question Mark & Dog’s Head Brooch | 15ct Gold, Diamond & Pearl | English c.1880s

Description
A clever and quietly eccentric piece, this brooch turns a question mark into something altogether more personal.
Made in England in the 1880s and set in 15ct gold, it winds into the shape of a riding crop, with a dog’s head at the top and a pearl near the base.
Rose-cut diamonds (approx. 0.60ct total) add sparkle to the curve, while the form itself suggests a private joke or a playful riddle - perhaps made for someone who loved animals, country life, or simply didn’t take themselves too seriously.
A question mark, a dog’s head, a riding crop… all in fine gold with diamonds and a pearl? It’s layered with meaning, but also beautifully absurd in the most refined way.
Approximately 5cm long
Available exclusively at ELTONS, Grays Antique Market, Mayfair, London.
