Description
A Victorian blue enamel, pearl, garnet and gold snake bangle; with dark blue guilloché enamel; with natural half seed pearls set in the head, eyebrows and in double bands on the neck and tail; with cabochon-cut garnet set eyes; with an open mouth, showing teeth and a tongue. There are two, sprung hinges towards the back. The bangle is mounted in gold. English, circa 1849. The inside of the back is engraved, "Given by Adelaide Queen Dowager, to Lady Susan Harcourt, on her marriage, 1849". In Victorian symbolism the coiled snake represented eternal love.
Lady Susan Harcourt (née Lady Susan Harriet Holroyd), 1829–1894, married English politician and naturalist Edward William Vernon Harcourt in June 1849. She was the daughter of the 2nd Earl of Sheffield and an accomplished artist who illustrated her husband's 1851 book, A Sketch of Madeira.
Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen (Adelaide Amelia Louise Theresa Caroline; 13th August, 1792 – 2nd December, 1849) was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and Queen of Hanover from 26 June 1830 to 20 June 1837 as the wife of King William IV. She was known for giving a large portion of her household income to several charitable causes. She was beloved by the British people for her piety, modesty, charity, and her tragic childbirth history.
