Description
Victorian Dog Mosaic Brooch. An exceptional antique Victorian micro mosaic brooch crafted in 18ct gold, dating from the mid to late 19th century. The rectangular plaque is finely decorated with an exquisitely detailed micro mosaic depicting a reclining King Charles spaniel-type dog within a naturalistic landscape. Executed using incredibly small hand-set glass tesserae, the mosaic displays remarkable precision and artistry, particularly in the intricate rendering of the dog’s fur and surrounding foliage. Set against a rich black ground, the colourful mosaic composition is framed within an elegant nicely engraved 18ct gold mount that enhances the refinement of the piece without detracting from the extraordinary craftsmanship. Micro mosaic jewellery of this quality was highly sought after during the Victorian Grand Tour period, when affluent travellers acquired finely worked Roman mosaics as sophisticated souvenirs and collectors’ pieces. Animal subjects, particularly dogs, were especially admired for their symbolism of loyalty and companionship. The brooch measures 4×4.7cm.
