Description
Fine Edo period Japanese wood Netsuke of a Sarumawashi (monkey trainer) and his monkey. The Sarumawashi was a street entertainer who performed tricks with his monkey. The little monkey is depicted crawling over the back of the seasoned trainer reclining with a tired expression. The finely carved figure of good patina,the underside with twin himotoshi circa 1820
