Antique Maltese Gran Spinat 18ct Gold Stars Link Long Chain, Circa 1830

£9,000.00

Description

An antique Maltese, Gran Spinat, long chain, of box links, with stars on the outer faces of each link, decorated with granulated balls, mounted in 18ct gold, with AC makers marks, 1820 to 1850, with a later antique, French, Albert clasp.

The Gran Spinat technique was traditionally used for making gold wedding chains, worn by men. The style of work was brought to Malta during the reign of the Order of the Knights of St. John. In the 19th century it was used for souvenir jewellery. It was particularly favoured by British tourists, who named it "rose-chain" work. Many examples were exhibited at the Great Exhibition, in 1851. Today there is only one craftsman who still makes Gran Spinat chain in Malta.
