Grand Duchess Alexandra of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, born Princess Alexandra of Hanover and Cumberland, 1882-1963. Born in Gmunden, Austria, on September 29, 1882, Alexandra was the daughter of Ernest Augustus, Crown Prince of Hanover, and Princess Thyra of Denmark. She was named after her maternal aunt, Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom. She was also the niece of Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia. Because of her family's Hanoverian roots, she was a British princess until her titles were removed by the British government, in 1917, during World War I. In June 1904, she married Grand Duke Frederick Francis IV. She served as the final Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin from 1904 until the monarchy was overthrown, in the 1918 German Revolution. The couple had five children. Following the abdication of her husband in November 1918, she lost her formal court roles but remained a prominent figure in European royal circles. She lived quietly in Germany and Austria until her death in 1963.
