Description
Chinese double gourd vase, Kangxi (1662-1722), the bulbous lower section decorated with an assortment of the hundred antiques including ancient bronze-form vessels and incense burners, texts, brushes and peacock plumes, with auspicious symbols including an artemisia leaf and babao (an open lozenge and cash coin), and an inset roundel containing flowers and grasses issuing from rockwork with flying insects; the ribbed central section with flowerheads and further flying insects, the long neck with two rows of stiff leaves and a geometric floral band to the gently flaring rim.
Notes:
The hundred antiques are a collection of symbolic items combining scholarly objects with auspicious Buddhist emblems. The motif became popular in ceramic and textile design from the beginning of the Kangxi period due to its connotations with the gentleman collector, good taste and learning.
