Description

Chinese famille rose plate, Qianlong (1736-95), decorated to the central roundel with a scene of cherry pickers; a gentleman on a ladder passing down cherries to two women on the ground, one collecting the fruit in her dress, the other reclining on the ground with a basket and dogs, the rim with a rope twist design.

Dimensions:

Condition:

Good

Notes:
The design on this plate is taken from a painting called ‘The Cherry Pickers’ by the French artist Antoine Baudouin (1723-1769). The painting was later reproduced in an engraving by Nicolas Ponce (1746-1769), which popularised the design and led to its appearance on Chinese porcelain for export to Europe. The V&A collection contains two Iranian ceramics of the same design, only with pomegranates replacing cherries, demonstrating the popularity and widespread adoption of the source (accession nos. 980-1876 / 1768A-1876)
