Description

Chinese famille verte spice box, Kangxi (1662-1722), of canted octagonal form with moulded human mask handles and slightly everted rim, the interior divided into three compartments, the exterior decorated in overglaze enamels to either side with butterflies and other insects in flight amongst flowers and foliage, below a band of predominantly green diaper with small cartouches containing further butterflies and flowers; the spreading foot with a geometric pattern of stiff leaves and dots; the interior rim with a hatch-pattern band in green.
