Description

Details below of the two fine seals.

1. A finely worked Pinchbeck Fob / Seal, set with a beautiful "Madeira" Citrine, carved as an Intaglio with the portrait image of Lord Horatio Nelson. The ribbon detail carved in reverse with Nelson's motto "Faith.and.Works". The scrolling foliate casting rising to a deep bail, through which is attached the original Split Ring.

Pinchbeck was invented in the early 18th Century by Dr Christopher Pinchbeck (died 1732), a London clock-and watch-maker. Much favoured by his coach-travelling clientele, who wanted to wear alternatives to Gold, it continued to be made (by his descendants), up until the 1830's.
