Description

An early 18th Century English quarter repeating verge with gold champleve dial in gold repousse pair cases. Full plate fire gilt movement with signed and numbered silver dust cover. Pierced and engraved masked cock, large diamond endstone in a blue steel setting, silver regulator disc. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Push pendant quarter repeating on a bell in the case. Signed gold champleve dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, fine blue steel beetle and poker hands. Fine 22 carat gold pair cases, gold push pendant and bow. The sides of the inner case finely pierced and engraved with foliate decoration, number corresponding to that on the movement engraved below the pendant, maker's mark "IW". 22 carat gold outer case, the back depicting a chased and engraved repousse scene of Diana discovering Endymion. Around the scene four chased and engraved repousse cherubs separated by four pierced and engraved panels. Pierced and engraved bezel, four chased and engraved repousse cartouches aligning with the cherubs on the back. Sprung gold pin for the pulse piece.

An attractive example of an 18th Century English quarter repeater in a repousse case. In excellent overall condition. The outer scene depicts the Roman myth of the goddess Diana falling in love with the mortal shepherd Endymion upon discovering him sleeping. Overcome by his beauty, she visited him nightly to adore him undisturbed. Samuel Whichcote, Crane Court, Fleet Street. Apprenticed 1716, Clockmakers Company 1724.
