Description

Italian maiolica Castelli plate, mid 18th c., decorated in polychrome with two pastoral figures beyond a stream in a classical Italian landscape, all within ochre rims, diameter: 17.3cm. (6 3/4cm.) condition: areas of paint loss to yellow rim, with metal mount. The landscape is painted in the style of French engraver Gabriel Perelle (1604-1677). Prints were commonly used as sources of design in the Castelli workshops, and were sometimes pricked for direct transfer
