An exceptional Victorian Lapis Lazuli Signet Ring Gifted By Prince Alfred, Son of Queen Victoria 1861 in 18ct gold. The oval polished lapis lazuli is held within a simple gold collet, framed by beautifully formed scroll shoulders and a finely reeded shank. The reverse bears the extraordinary hand-engraved inscription “The Gift of Prince Alfred Ernest Albert to A. F. Stewart”, together with the “date 1st March 1861”. Prince Alfred Ernest Albert was the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and would later become the Duke of Edinburgh from 1866. At the time this ring was presented he was just sixteen years old whilst he was in the royal navy making the inscription a fascinating tangible connection to the Victorian Royal Family. Prince Alfred joined the navy at just 12 years old. HE died in 1900 aged 55 from cancer and was survived by his mother. More than simply a beautiful Victorian lapis ring, this is a highly unusual royal presentation jewel, retaining the name of both its royal giver and recipient together with the precise date on which it was gifted. The ring is in its completely original condition and is excellently made. The ring weighs 9.4g and the oval lapis with mount measures 1.2mm x 1.42mm. The ring is a size K.
