Large Japanese Arita blue and white tankard, Edo period, late 17th century, with rounded belly and strap handle, the body decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with two long shaped panels containing landscape scenes; one with waterfowl beside a shoreline planted with shrubs and trees, with mountains visible in the background, the other with various birds in a woodland setting with plantain; all set against a ground with dense karakusa scroll, the strap handle with further karakusa scroll, the rim and footrim with double circles.
