Description

Large Japanese blue and white Arita dish, 17th century, decorated in the centre with fruiting branches of pomegranate and peaches amongst stylised leaves, the border with Kraak-style panels containing branches of flowers or precious objects.

Diameter: 13 ¼ in. (32.8 cm.)

Although not native to Japan, pomegranates can frequently be found in Japanese ceramic design. The motif is adapted from Chinese and Islamic models: in both cultures, the fruit is a symbol of fertility and numerous children.
