Description
Pair of Japanese imari chargers, circa 1700, decorated to the central roundels with a rocky riverside scene with maple, pagoda and pavilion, the rims with alternate scrolling cartouches containing further landscape scenes with prunus and chrysanthemum, and peonies against a foliate gilt ground, the reverse with scrolling leaves in underglaze blue and flowers in iron-red to outer rim and the base with double concentric circle in underglaze blue containing a flower in iron red and gilt. An imari dish with similar central design can be found in the Metropolitan Museum
