Description
A late 18th Century quarter repeating cylinder by Mudge and Dutton in rare agate set gold pair cases. Full plate fire gilt movement with turned pillars. Pierced and engraved masked cock, large diamond endstone in a blue steel setting, silver regulator disc. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Polished steel cylinder, large steel escape wheel. Push pendant quarter repeating on a bell in the case. Fine white enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, gold beetle and poker hands. 22 carat gold inner case, the sides pierced to allow the bell to sound and engraved with foliage and fire breathing dragons, stone set push pendant. Very rare and attractive outer case. The bezels and frames of 22 carat gold. The back set with a scalloped hexagonal grey agate within a border of sapphires. Around the central agate are six oval banded agate stones also bordered by sapphires. Between these oval stones are pierced white metal trefoils set with clear stones. The front bezel similarly decorated but with rectangular banded agates with sapphires at the ends. A narrow border of sapphires set in the bezel of the outer case surrounding the watch dial.
Thomas Mudge and William Dutton were among the most eminent makers of the 18th Century. Both had been apprenticed to George Graham who introduced the cylinder escapement.
