Rare Kangxi Scholars’ vase
Similarly decorated Kangxi vases of this rare shape can be found in the Smithsonian Museum https://asia-archive.si.edu/object/F1982.21a-b/ and in a Spinks catalogue of the Pullan collection.
From a well-cut foot the sides curve gently outwards to an inward curving shoulder that supports a flared neck. The body is painted in a bright cobalt-underglaze blue with scholars in the rocky landscape with pine trees, remote houses and a lake, the base of the neck with a leiwen band
Scholar’s rocks (Gongzhi) craggy mountains and boulders symbolize longevity, strength and endurance
