A silver gilt relief of the Pieta.

German, 15th century.

Measures 8.6 x 5.4 x 1.8cm (excluding its modern bronze display stand).

The finely cast and engraved relief shows the body of the deceased Christ supported by the mourning figures of the Virgin, Saint John the Evangelist and Mary Magdalene before the vacant cross, which still bears the mocking ‘INRI’ banner left there by Pontius Pilate.
