Latvian 18th century silver gilt cup and cover, c.1740 by Georgs Fridrihs Gronavs, c.1740.

Marked ‘IFG’ for Georgs Fridrihs Gronavs with town marks for Jelgava.

Size:

Diameter: 14.5cm.

Height: 29.8cm.

Weight: 874gr.

There is an inserted 18th century coin on the bottom of the cup and an engraving ‘Jacob Douglas 1744’ under the cup. On the front body there is an armorial of probably William Douglas.

William Douglas was 3rd Earl of the Marsh in the Scottish Peerage and the 4th Duke of Queensbury.

At the end of the 18th century he was estimated to be the eighth richest person in Britain.
