Description

Chinese blue and white kendi, Wanli (1573-1619), of round slightly depressed bulbous form, the body with stylised seedpods against scrolling foliage below a band of beribboned babao to the shoulders, the short spout with fruits and foliage, the tall, slightly flaring neck with stiff leaves and foliate sprays to the rim.

Dimensions:

Notes:
This kendi was made for the Islamic market; the shape originated in Islamic cultures before being adopted by Chinese potters, largely for export. This type of drinking vessel was traditionally to be used communally, with the shape and height designed so that liquid could be poured into the mouth without touching the lips.
