Description
Japanese blue and white Arita tankard, circa 1680, decorated with three panels, containing flowers, birds in trees issuing from rockwork, ducks in a river setting, and ladies with parasols, all set within a rocky landscape with pagodas, against a scrolling background interspersed by flowerheads; height: 9 1/4in. (23.5cm.) Hole inserted for metal lid at time of manufacture. There is a similar example at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, collection no. J111 from the Soame Jenyns Collection ; There is another example in the Victoria and Albert Museum with European silver mounts, no. C.417-1918, from the collection of Percival V. David.
