Description
Pair of Chinese Canton enamel bowls and covers, Qianlong (1736-95), rising from a narrow yellow foot, decorated to the bodies and covers with rectangular cartouches featuring an assortment of the 'Hundred Antiques', including archaistic bronze vessels and incense burners, coral, ruyi-head sceptres and fly whisks; the cartouches in reserve against a pale green ground with dense foliate scroll and large pink flower heads, the lids with further bands of pink foliate scroll to the handles.

The hundred antiques are a collection of symbolic items combining scholarly objects with auspicious Buddhist emblems. The motif became popular from the beginning of the Kangxi period due to its association with the gentleman collector, good taste and learning.
