Description

Rare Chinese canton enamel inkstand, Qianlong (1736-1795), of rectangular form and raised on low feet with four main compartments including a lidded box for storing brushes, a small pen stand and inkwells, all with brass fittings, the two smaller boxes decorated to the sides with archaistic vessels and blooming lotus below bands of green diaper ground with small floral cartouches, the tops with florets against a blue ground, the small cylindrical stand with meandering pink foliate scroll and the long brush box decorated to the sides and lid with ogee-shaped panels against a pink cellular ground containing a variety of flowers, foliage, fruits and insects including peony, morning glory, pomegranate and buddha’s-hand citron; the three square sections and reverse of the base tray with further sprays of fruits and flowers, including buddha’s hand citron, peony, pomegranate and peach.

Condition: Crack to base panel along edge of stand for ink, candle and sander, wear to enamel where the brass protective surround for ink sits
